The Role Caller

self-serve role pickers

Browse the guide

A message members click to add or remove their own roles (buttons or a dropdown). Use several pickers to split menus by topic or across channels, and auto-assign roles on join. Looking for reaction roles? Same idea, without the emoji. Members click a button or pick from a dropdown instead of reacting, and one menu can offer up to 25 roles. (Configure → Role Caller.)

Each menu also has its own rules, set on the menu itself:

  • Who can use it. Require a role (any one of a list), block a role, or gate a single option so only some members can take that one. Write your own message for anyone turned away, or let Packet explain the reason.
  • How picking works. Cap how many roles a member may hold from the menu, make choices final so a role can't be handed back, or freeze the whole menu without deleting it.
  • Only so many. Give one option a member cap and the menu stops handing that role out once that many members hold it, and tells the member it is full. It is a soft cap: the count can be about a minute old, so a rush can pass it by a few, and if Packet cannot read the count the pick goes through. Taking the role off is never refused.
  • Roles that give themselves back. Set an expiry and Packet removes the role on its own. Members are told when, right as they pick.
  • Picking by command. Turn on /role and members can take or drop a role from these menus by name. They can also press it: open /packet home, choose Features, then Roles. Either way the menu's own rules apply.
